"Charley" Harold Dare
October 28, 1933 - August 11, 2009
“Charley” Harold Dare, 75, of Liberty, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis after a short illness.
He was born October 28, 1933 to Loren and Bernice Bagley Dare in Frankfort, Indiana and was a 1951 graduate of Kitchel High School. On July 4, 1954, he married the former Charmaign Cox at Hanna’s Creek Christian Church, and joined the United States Army in August. A Union County resident since Jr. High School, he was an active member of Hanna’s Creek Christian Church as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School volunteer, moderator and trustee. His contribution to the community included service as a 4-H Leader, 4-H Junior Leader Advisor, and as a member of the 4-H Association, Little League manager and coach, and a member of the Franklin County Antique Machinery Club. He had also been a member of the Extension Board, Harrison Township Trustee, Civil Defense Director, County Council, and County Commissioners.
Charley owned and operated several businesses in Liberty over the years, Dare Trucking, Dare Auto Sales, and Green Tee Putt-Putt. He also had been employed as a Highway Supervisor for Union County Highway Department, and most recently drove for Dare Trucking. In his free time he enjoyed attending tractor shows, cattle shows, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include: his wife of 55 years; daughter and son-in-law: Ginny and Kent McFarland of Lewisville; son and daughter-in-law: Abe and Tonya Dare of Liberty; brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert and Nancy Dare of Northport, AL, Reverend Fred and Nancy Dare of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters and brothers-in-law: Rita and Jim Ripberger of Liberty, Ruth Ann Frost and Dale Howard of Centerville, 10 grandchildren and their spouses: Aimee and Wes Cox, Dustin and Emily Bruns, all of Brookville, Stacy Bruns of Cambridge City, Daisy and Scott Logue, Joshua and Lori Dare, Jacob Dare, Sunita Dare, Ravi Dare, Ramya Dare, Ekata Dare, all of Liberty, 6 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty, with Pastor Dana Hadden of the Hanna’s Creek Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Boston. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday where memorial contributions may be made to the Hanna’s Creek Christian Church or to the American Cancer Society.
