Biography

Dorothy A. Whitten, 86, formerly of Connersville, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Franklin. She had resided in Franklin for the past six months.
Dorothy was born October 4, 1923 in Napoleon, Ripley County, to Christian S. and Lydia May Idelwine Hermann. In 1941, she graduated from Greensburg High School and was employed at Johnson Wholesale, Greensburg. On December 12, 1942, she was married in Greensburg to William B. Whitten, who died February 19, 2007. They moved to Connersville in 1947. In the late 1950’s, Dorothy served as secretary of the United Fund. She began her employment career at Central State Bank as a teller, later advancing to head teller; branch manager of Fifth-Third Bank, 30th Street Branch; and bank officer. She retired in 1990 after 30 years of service. Since 1948, Dorothy had been a member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, where she held many positions. She was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the 12th Night Adult Class, the United Methodist Women, and the treasurer of Happy Time Preschool from its inception until 2007. Her other memberships include the National Association of Bank Women, Business and Professional Women, Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, and Indiana Federation of Women’s Clubs. She was active in a local reading club and was a member of the Friends of the Library. Dorothy enjoyed time with her family, gardening, raising flowers, cooking, and traveling.
Dorothy is survived by three children and their spouses: Anna May Adams and Glenn of Edinburgh; Dr. William B. Whitten II and Sandra of Holmdel, New Jersey; Barbara K. Coulter of Beech Grove; a sister: Martha Zane of Connersville; a brother: Harry Hermann of Connersville; five grandchildren and their spouses: Jennifer Whitten; Amanda James and Jeffrey; Emily Whitten, Esq.; Christopher Coulter; Jonathan Coulter and Elizabeth; two great-grandchildren: Annabelle Coulter, Benjamin James; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Monday at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Betty Ann Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, from 3 to 6 PM Sunday and at the church, after 1 PM Monday.
